Did Funny Sounds in the Pipes Lead to a Costly Water Damage Discovery in a Chicago Hotel?

2/4/2025 (Permalink)

A burst pipe is shown. We are frozen pipe damage restoration leaders in Chicago.

A Downtown Chicago hotel manager thought the strange banging sounds coming from the pipes were harmless—until a burst pipe caused significant water damage. During frigid weather, ice forming inside pipes can cause expansion, leading to cracking. The thawed water surges when temperatures rise, creating unusual noises as it moves through damaged pipes.

In this case, the hotel's basement flooded overnight, soaking inventory and damaging expensive equipment. The water also saturated the walls, creating the potential for mold growth and further structural concerns. Fortunately, the manager called our local Bedford Park/Burbank teams. Due to our fast response and mitigation of the damage, the emergency went unnoticed by the hotel guests, and the hotel remained operational.

To avoid similar scenarios, businesses should insulate pipes, monitor for unusual sounds, and keep heating systems operational during winter. Drafty areas should be sealed to maintain consistent indoor temperatures. If pipe noises persist or water pressure drops, a thorough inspection can identify issues before a major disaster strikes.

When water damage occurs, our professionals will arrive quickly and immediately begin the mitigation process. We will restore the water damage "Like  it never even happened."
