Fifty years ago, most people learned about today's weather by looking at the local newspaper. Twenty five years ago, we watched the local news. Today, people are more instantaneous; they want the weather right now!
Sure, newspapers and television still have weather reports. When an outbreak of storms are about to encroach on the area, many people watch their cable weather channel. But, more and more people are relying on their phones to give them what they want.
But, there's another alternative: the weather radio.
Weather radios can be programmed to your community or zip code. It not only gives you forecasts for the coming days, but also is very current when watches or warnings are issued in your community.
You can program the radio to announce severe weather as it approaches your area. If you're sleeping and a line of severe storms just popped up and are encroaching on your town, the radio will announce that a severe storm warning, or tornado watch or warning has been issued, and that you may have to take precautions immediately. It can also notify you of flooding concerns that can be expected in your area.
A small investment in a weather radio can mean the difference between being safe and being in harm's way.
