Water damage causes hardwood floor to buckle
Water damage to a hardwood floor can be devastating. The water/moisture gets trapped just under the flooring and above the subfloor, where the wood absorbs and swells. Since it cannot go down or to any sides (due to lack of space), it raises up and causes it to buckle.
If the water damage is clean water (from a pipe break for example) is caught early, and with the proper drying technique, many hardwood floors will return back to its original shape, often times with just minor finish work.
